Bead Store - 2” Snowflake
A = Miyuki 11° SEED bead, 300 beads
B = Miyuki 15° SEED bead, 36 beads
D = Miyuki 11° DELICA bead, 280 Delica’s

Nymo D Thread or Fireline (6 lb or 8 lb*)

*I used 8 lb for this pattern

#11 or #12 beading needle

Start by waxing and stretching your thread. Use Fireline*, Nymo D or C-Lon and an #11 or #12 beading needle. Tie in a “stopper” bead, leaving about a 8-10” tail and begin at R1. *I have recently started using Fireline® fishing line, too. I like 4lb and 6lb Crystal for bead weaving.

1. Pick up 12A, make a ring by going with thread through the 1st A bead just added. Continue with working thread around through all 12 beads again, plus go through the 1st bead one more time.

 

2. a) Pick up 3A, go with thread forward through 1 A bead and skipping over 1 A bead in step #1.

b) Repeat (a) around 5 more times

c) Continue with working thread forward through the 1st and 2nd beads added in the first repeat of (a) this Round.

*Please Note: The peyote sides are marked with S1, S2, S3 and S4

3. Pick up 9D, 1A, 3D, 1A, 3D, 1A, 9D, go with thread right to left through the 2nd A bead, step #2 as shown and up through the 1st D bead just added in this step.

4. Add with peyote, 4 D beads up left side (S1), at the 3 corners add 2A beads, add with peyote top left and top right peyote 1 D beads (S2 and S3), and then add 4 D beads down the right side (S4) as shown. Continue with thread right to left through the 2nd A bead, step #2 as shown and up through the 1st D bead step #3 and the 1st D bead just added in this step.

 5. Add with peyote, 4 D beads up left side (S1), at the 3 corners add 1A bead, at top left and top right peyote 2 D beads (S2 and S3), and then add 4 D beads down the right side (S4) as shown. Continue with thread right to left through the 2nd A bead, step #2 as shown and up through the 1st D bead step #3, the 1st D bead, step #4 and the 1st D bead just added in this step.

6.Add with peyote, 1A and then 2B beads up left side (S1), nothing is added at corners, instead go with working thread through 4 beads as shown, add with peyote 1 B bead at the top left (S2 ) at the very top add 5A beads, add with peyote 1 B bead at the top right (S3), and then add 2 B and 1 A beads down the right side (S4) as shown. Continue with thread down through the 3 rows of peyote and right to left through the 2nd A bead, step #2 as shown. Weave through steps #2 and #1 beads as shown coming out with thread right through left through the next 2nd A bead, step #2.

 7. Repeat steps #3 through #5.

8. Add with peyote, 1A and then 2B beads up left side (S1), nothing is added at corners, instead go with working thread through 4 beads as shown, add with peyote 1 B bead at the top left (S2 ) at the very top add 5A beads, add with peyote 1 B bead at the top right (S3), and then add 2 B beads down the right side (S4) as shown. Continue with working thread down through the 1st A bead added in step #6 and then down through the 3 rows of peyote and right to left through the 2nd A bead, step #2 as shown. Weave through steps #2 and #1 beads as shown coming out with thread right to left through left through the next 2nd A bead, step #2.

9. Repeat steps #7 and #8 3 times..

10. Repeat steps #3 through #5. After finishing step #5 repeat, continue with working thread up through the last A bead added in the first step #6 repeat as shown.

11. Add with peyote, 2B beads up left side (S1), nothing is added at corners, instead go with working thread through 4 beads as shown, add with peyote 1 B bead at the top left (S2 ) at the very top add 5A beads, add with peyote 1 B bead at the top right (S3), and then add 2 B beads down the right side (S4) as shown. Continue with working thread down through the 1st A bead added in step #6 repeat as shown and then down through the 3 rows of peyote and left to right through the 2nd A bead, step #2. Weave your working thread into the snowflake and end.

Finishing

After the snowflake is complete, you can stiffen it with SC Johnson Pledge Future Shine. It is a great stiffener; it stays clear even on the crystals. Test it first if you use seed beads with dyed colors to make sure the floor finish doesn’t remove the colors.

Pour enough of the Future Shine into a small container that is wide enough for the ornament. Float the ornament into the Future® Shine and push it around a bit with your finger. (After I am done, I use a funnel and pour the extra back into the bottle).

Take the ornament out and blot both sides with a paper towel.

Put the ornament on a piece of wax paper, shape and flatten it and let it remain on the wax paper to dry. (If you use plastic wrap, the beads can stick a bit to the wrap, so it needs to be moved around a bit to prevent this from happening.) If your ornament needs a little extra flattening, use two pieces of wax paper and sandwich your ornament in between; put a book on top of the wax paper for about an hour. Take the book and the top piece of wax paper off the ornament and let dry overnight on the bottom piece of wax paper.

Optional Natural Stiffener

Gather your Supplies

1 TBSP Corn Starch

1 Cup cold water

1 TBSP White Glue

Wax Paper or plastic Wrap

Paper Towel

Old Pan

Tablespoon

Whisk

Something to swish your beadwork around ( I used a plastic fork)

After the snowflake is complete, you can stiffen it. Test first if you use seed beads with dyed or lined colors to make sure this mix to make sure it doesn’t remove the colors.

Start by whisking together 1 Tablespoon of corn starch with 1 cup of cold water in your pan. Heat just to boiling while whisking in 1 TBSP of white glue. Continue whisking until the mixture starts to boil. Take off of the burner and let cool.

Float your snowflake ornament in the mixture and push it around a bit with your plastic spoon (mine is a fork). Leave for a couple of minutes and then stir around one more time before taking it out to dry.

Take the ornament out and blot both sides with a paper towel. Be especially mindful of your crystals that you rub the mixture off.

Put the ornament on a piece of wax paper, shape and flatten it and let it remain on the wax paper to dry. (If you use plastic wrap, the beads can stick a bit to the wrap, so it needs to be moved around a bit to prevent this from happening.) If your ornament needs a little extra flattening, use two pieces of wax paper and sandwich your ornament in between; put a book on top of the wax paper for about an hour. Take the book and the top piece of wax paper off the ornament and let dry overnight on the bottom piece of wax paper.

Thats it!

Clean up is easy too and no lasting odor.

Enjoy your new snowflakes.

Some other ideas for stiffening your snowflakes, I have not tried any of these but they have been suggested by other beaders and bead designers. Worth a try if nothing else is available. My suggestion is to test it first on a small sample of your beadwork.

Rounds start at the Red dot ●

Please Note: In the illustrations you will see spaces between the beads, this is because the illustrations are flat and the ornament is not. When bead weaving your ornament, do not leave spaces between your beads.

Round 1

Pick up 12A, go with thread forward through the 1st A bead just added in this step.

 

Round 2

a) Pick up 15B, go with thread forward through the A bead that the working thread is exiting, and 2 more A beads in R1.

b) Repeat (a), 5 more time around.

c) Continue with working thread forward through the 1st, 2nd and 3rd A beads added in the first repeat of (a) this R. 

 

Round 3

a) Pick up 1A, go with thread up through the 12th and 11th B beads, R2(a).

b) Pick up 1A, go with thread down through the 5th and 4th B beads in the same repeat, R2(a).

c) Repeat (a & b) around 5 more times.

d) Continue with working thread forward through the 1st A bead added in the first repeat of (a) this R. 

 

Round 4

a) Pick up 4A, go with thread right to left through the 8th B bead, R2(a).

b) Pick up 4A, go with thread right to left through the 1 A bead, R3(a).

c) Pick up 12A, go with thread forward through the 2nd, 3rd and 4th A beads added in this Round at (b), the 1 A bead, R3(a), and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd A beads just added in this step.

d) Pick up 1A, go with thread right to left through the 8th B bead in the next repeat, R2(a).

e) Repeat (b, c & d) around 4 more times.

Repeat (b) 1 time. Continue forward with working thread through the 1st, 2nd and 3rd A beads added in this Round at (a).

f) Pick up 9A, go with thread forward through the 2nd, 3rd and 4th A beads added in the last repeat of (b), this Round, right to left through the 1 A bead, R3(a), and forward through the 4 A beads added in this Round at (a).


Round 5

a) Pick up 1B, go with thread forward through the 1st A bead, R4(b), and the 12th, 11th and 10th A beads, R4(c).

b) Pick up 1B, go with thread forward through the 6th, 5th and 4th A beads, R4(c), and the 1 A bead, R4(d).

c) Repeat (a & b) around 5 more times.

d) Continue with working thread forward through the 1 B bead added in the first repeat of (a), this Round.

Round 6

a) Pick up 4B, go with thread up through the 9th A bead, R4(c or f).

b) Pick up 1B, 1A, 1B, go with thread down through the 7th A bead, R4(c or f).

c) Pick up 4B, go with thread forward through the 1 A bead, R5(a), and up through the 4th and 3rd B beads just added in this step..

d) Pick up 2B, go with thread up through the 9th A bead, R4(d or a).

e) Repeat (b, c &d) around 4 more times. Repeat (b), 1 time.

f) Pick up 2B, go with thread down through the 2nd and 1st B beads added in this Round at (a), the 1 A bead, R4(a), up and forward through the 4 B beads, this R(a), forward through the 9th A bead, R4(c), and the 1st B and 1st A beads added in the first repeat of (b) this Round.

Round 7

a) Pick up 15A, go with thread right to left through the 1 B bead, R6(b), and forward through the 1st through 5th A beads just added in this step.

b) Pick up 5B, 5A, go with thread forward through the next 1 B bead, R6(b).

c) Pick up 10A, go with thread forward through the 5 A beads, this R at (b), the 1 B bead, R6(b) and the 1st through 5th A beads just added in this step.

d) Repeat (b & c) around 4 more times.

e) Pick up 5B, go with thread down through the 11th and 12th A beads added in (a), this R.

Round 8

a) Pick up 2B, go with thread up through the 4th and 5th A beads, R7(a or c) and forward through the 1st and 2nd A beads, R7(b or e).

b) Pick up 8B, 1C, 6B, 1C, 1D, 1B, go with thread up through the 1 D, 1 C, 6 B, 1 C and the 8th through 2nd B beads just added in this step.

c) Pick up 1B, go with thread forward through the 4th and 5th B beads, R7(b or e) and down through the 11th and 12th B beads, R7(c or a).

d) Repeat (a, b & c) around 5 more times.

e) Continue by following the purple dotted line in illustration through with working thread, coming out with thread left to right through the 8th A bead, R7(a).

 

Round 9

This Round is worked clockwise

a) Pick up 10A, 1C, 8A, 1C, 1D, 1A, go with thread up through the 1 D, 1 C, 8 A, 1 C and the 10th through 2nd A beads just added in this step.

b) Pick up 1A, go with thread down through the 10th and 11th A beads, R7(a or c), and the 5th A bead, R7(b).

c) Pick up 5A, go with thread up through the 5th and 6th A beads, R7(a or c).

d) Pick up 10A, 1C, 8A, 1C, 1D, 1A, go with thread up through the 1 D, 1 C, 8 A, 1 C, 9 A beads just added in this step.

e) Pick up 1A, go with thread down through the 8th A bead, R7(a or c).

d) Repeat (a, b, c, d & e) around 5 more times.

Weave the working thread into the ornament and end.

1 inch Square Box _ optional
Blue = Miyuki 11° Delica bead, 2,140 beads (approximately 10 grams)
White Pearl = Miyuki 11° Delica bead, 188 (approximately 1 grams)
Miyuki 15° Seed bead, color of choice, 55 (less than 1 gram)

Nymo D, C-Lon Thread or Fireline (4 or 6 pound), #11 or #12 beading needle.

Be aware that if you use Fireline it is not as bendable as the thread. Try to work a bit looser and continuously bend the edges down while working on your piece.

**Start by waxing and stretching your thread (not needed if using Fireline). Tie in a “stopper” bead, leaving about a 6-8” tail for weaving in later and begin.

For the bottom of the Liner I used 3 different colors just for ease of seeing the rounds. You can use what ever color you prefer. How about Hot Pink!

The liner starts in Circular, flat peyote stitch. Then the sides are worked in Tubular peyote. 

Please Note:

 Place the Liner in your box. You can just place it, sew it or glue it permanently in.

Please Note:

If you have an original Thread Heaven box you can use that instead of the beaded liner if you prefer.

Round 15 through Round 29 are worked with Delica beads, the last Round is worked with 15/0 seed beads.

Christmas Lights Necklace Pattern

 

Light up your holidays with this beautiful string of lights. It can be made as a necklace and also a bracelet.

Bead Counts

A = Miyuki 11/0 SEED bead, #468, 55* 

                + 14 for one end + 12 for clasps 

B = Miyuki 11/0 SEED bead, #02, 30* 

                + 1 for one end 

C = Miyuki 11/0 SEED bead, #1425, 3* 

D = Miyuki 11/0 SEED bead, #25F, 1660, 1436, and 1425, 21* - I used 4 different colors for the bulbs, The illustrations only show 1 color.
